James Harden ties Larry Bird with 59th career triple-double - NBA.com

James Harden posts 18 points, 12 assists & 10 rebounds in Nets' win.

James Harden notched his 59th career triple-double against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, tying Larry Bird for seventh-most all time.

In just three quarters, the Nets star posted 18 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists as Brooklyn took a 22-point lead entering the final period. Recently named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, Harden knocked down 4-of-7 3-point attempts, with his lethal stepback on full display.

“It’s getting there. I’m starting to feel real, real good,” said Harden after his balanced attack in the Nets’ 117-91 victory.

James Harden talks about finding his groove after recording his first triple-double of the season vs. Detroit.

In addition to Harden’s dominant performance, the Nets were extremely efficient on the offensive end, shooting a franchise record 65.3% from the field. Brooklyn’s previous record (65.2%) was set nearly 40 years ago on April 17, 1982 at Detroit.

Delort at the double as Nice sink Angers - Reuters

ANGERS, France, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Algerian Andy Delort netted a brace, including a stunning late volley, as Nice fought back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 away win over Angers in Ligue 1 on Sunday that lifted his side to second in the table.

The away side had started brightly as Delort struck the post with a glancing header, but they went behind in the 29th minute when Sofiane Boufal converted from the spot after being brought down in the box.

Delort equalised in the 57th minute, however, when his deflected chip from the edge of the area beat a stranded Paul Bernardoni. Nice should have taken the lead in the 71st minute through Lucas Da Cunha, but the youngster blazed over from close range.

The game seemed to be headed for a draw until Delort unleashed a thunderous strike after Angers failed to clear a corner in the first minute of stoppage time.

Nice have 23 points - eight behind PSG - from 12 games. Angers are eighth on 17 points.

Celtics takeaways: Poor 3-point shooting dooms C's in 2OT loss to Wizards - NBC Sports Boston

For the second time this week, the Washington Wizards made clutch shots and got enough stops on defense late in the game to beat the Boston Celtics.

After earning a 116-107 victory in Boston on Wednesday, the Wizards outlasted the Celtics in a 115-112 double overtime win Saturday night at Capital One Center. The Celtics made only one of their last 13 shots over the final 8:28 of the game.

The Wizards improve to 5-1 and continue to be one of the surprise teams of the early NBA season. The Celtics, meanwhile, drop to 2-4 with the loss.

The Celtics have now played five overtime periods in six games, including two double-OT matchups. They played four overtime periods all of last season.

Next up for the Celtics is a matchup against the Chicago Bulls at TD Garden on Monday night.

Here are five takeaways from Celtics-Wizards.

1) Poor execution late in games is a concern

The Celtics did not get enough quality looks at the basket and failed to take care of the ball late in the second overtime period. The C's had four possessions over the final 1:16 of the game and all of them were hard to watch.

  • Deni Avdija blocks Jayson Tatum's layup (1:16 remaining)
  • Jayson Tatum misses 9-foot shot (46.3)
  • Jayson Tatum turnover (17.0)
  • Jaylen Brown loses the ball (0.2)

Here's a breakdown of the final 8:28 of the game:

The final possession was particularly bad. Dennis Schroder dribbled for several seconds trying to find an open teammate or get his own shot and couldn't accomplish either one. He finally passed to Jaylen Brown, who was stripped by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to seal Washington's win.

Poor execution in clutch moments has hurt the Celtics often through the first six games. Whether it's bad spacing, settling for contested 3-pointers or committing turnovers, there are too many little mistakes being made at the end of these games.

2) Jaylen Brown's hot start continues

Brown was arguably the best player on the court Saturday night, scoring a team-high 34 points on 14-for-24 shooting (6-for-7 at the free throw line), along with six rebounds.

The 24-year-old guard scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including two buckets in the final 1:30 of the fourth quarter that put Boston up 103-102 with 20.3 seconds remaining. He did miss a potential buzzer-beater at the end of regulation, though.

Like the rest of his teammates, the 3-point shot wasn't falling for Brown, so he attacked the basket often, and it worked out quite well for him. He scored 25 of his 34 points in the paint or on free throws that resulted from him going to the basket.

Brown is averaging 26.4 points through five games to begin the season, and he's scored 30-plus points three times. Despite having a tougher time recovering after games since his recent bout with COVID, Brown has been very good offensively for the Celtics early on.

3) Celtics ice cold from 3-point range

The Celtics entered this game ranked No. 10 in the league hitting 35 percent of their 3-point shots, and yet they had an enormously difficult time hitting anything from deep against the Wizards.

Boston started out 0-for-20 from beyond the arc and came very close to breaking the record for the most 3-point attempts without a make (22, by the Denver Nuggets in 2012). The C's finally connected from beyond the arc with 8:58 left in the fourth quarter thanks to Payton Pritchard, and they finished 2-for-26 overall.

Overall, the Celtics settled for too many 3-point field goals. They should've been more aggressive in attacking the basket and trying to score at the rim, especially against a Wizards team that doesn't have a ton of quality shot blockers. Brown was one of the few C's players who adopted this mindset.

It's pretty remarkable the Celtics kept the score so close throughout the game despite shooting so poorly on 3-pointers.

4) Harrell an excellent pickup for Wizards

Harrell was one of several players the Wizards acquired from the Lakers as part of the Russell Westbrook trade in the offseason, and he's been a fantastic addition to the team's frontcourt.

After scoring 25 points with 11 rebounds in a win over the Celtics on Wednesday, the veteran center poured in 20 points with 13 rebounds on Saturday night before fouling out in double overtime. Harrell is averaging 19.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game for the Wizards. He provides more than scoring and rebounding, though -- his energy, especially on the defensive end of the floor, is contagious. The Wizards are a much tougher team when he's on the floor.

Harrell won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award in 2019-20, and he'll definitely be a strong contender for that trophy again if he continues to tally high double-doubles on a consistent basis.

5) Richardson makes an impact off the bench

Defense is where Richardson is expected to make his most profound impact for the Celtics this season, but he provided some much-needed scoring off the bench versus the Wizards.

The veteran forward scored a season-high 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting in 37 minutes. He also knocked down this clutch 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter to help the C's force overtime.

Bench scoring has been a weakness for the Celtics over the last few seasons, and with 2020 first-round draft picks Aaron Nesmith and Pritchard struggling to begin the 2021-22 campaign, veterans such as Richardson will need to pick up the slack.

Eagle girls' soccer wins quarter-final in double overtime - Addison County Independent

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham girls’ soccer team started the season with five straight losses.

Now the No. 11 seed Eagles are going to the Division II semifinals on Tuesday against No. 2 Woodstock.

The immediate reason the 7-8-1 Eagles will make that trip is junior forward Maia Jensen’s double-overtime game-winner in a Friday quarterfinal against visiting No. 14 Milton, which gave the Eagles a 2-1 victory over another team enjoying a late-season surge.

Jensen’s goal game came 49 seconds before the end of the second extra 20-minute session, with a penalty-kick shootout looming large. Sophomore Piper Guillmette set up the score. Guillmette controlled the ball while moving from left to right across the top of the Milton box and fed Jensen, cutting in from the right.

Jensen took a couple of touches forward before drilling a sharp-angled 15-yard yard shot low into the far corner and triggering an Eagle celebration.

The larger story of how the Eagles reached the semifinals is how they handled an 0-5 start to the season. All those setbacks came to D-I teams, and Coach Dustin Corrigan said the Eagles did not get discouraged. Rather, he believed they simply treated them as learning experiences and kept plugging.

Friday’s win means the Eagles are 7-3-1 since the tough start, and 5-0-1 in their past six games.

“I am so proud of this year’s group,” Corrigan said. “They have so much grit. It’s not always how we get it done, but they just grind it out. They outwork opponents. They stick together.”

And they had to do all that on Friday in a game of shifting momentum. Milton came out hard, but the Eagles began to assert themselves after the first 10 minutes wore on. Their pressure paid off in the 17th minute.

Senior Illia Dennison made a strong run down the middle and was fouled as she approached the box. She took the ensuing free kick from 28 yards out and drilled it high into the net over the wall to make it 1-0. Milton goalie Grace Williams, who made five saves, had no chance.

The Eagles continued to carry play for most of the first half, but Milton (4-10-2) dominated long stretches of the second half, including the final 15 minutes, forcing Eagle goalie Jo Toy to make most of her seven saves in the period. But Toy couldn’t stop Anna Grasso’s shot with seven minutes to go, and it was on to overtime.

In the extra sessions the Eagles regained their footing and had the edge, but neither team had a golden chance until Jensen sealed the deal.

“Milton definitely came to play,” Corrigan said. “There were times when we were having the run of play. There were times when we were having the run of play. It certainly wasn’t easy.”

Friday’s win followed the Eagles’ first-round 2-0 win at No. 5 Stratton on Wednesday. Dennison scored both goals in that game, one on a similar free kick and one with an assist from defender Annie Dufault. Toy made five saves, as did goalie Pip Greenberg for Stratton (10-4).

Corrigan said the Eagles will be confident no matter who they face in their semifinal.

“Our defense is strong. We’re confident in that, and our goalkeeper is outstanding … And we’re starting to score some goals now, as well,” Corrigan said. “We’re starting to believe maybe we can do it.”

Senior underworld boss killed in suspected double murder in northern Israel - The Times of Israel

Two men were found shot dead in northern Israel on Saturday in a suspected double murder.

The men — identified as Shumi Iskov (53) and his son (20) — were killed in the city of Kiryat Motzkin, adjacent to Haifa. Iskov was known to the police as the leader of the so-called Georgian mafia in the Krayot area in northern Israel.

Footage from the scene indicated that the men were found dead inside a car, on Zvulun Hammer street in the northern city.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said its medics were called to the scene shortly after 9 p.m. “We performed medical tests, but they were without vital signs, and we had no choice but to declare their deaths,” an MDA medic said.

Eyewitnesses told Channel 12 news that at least two suspects fired some 20 bullets toward the two men before fleeing the scene.

Police arrived on the scene and searched the area for suspects and evidence. Law enforcement believed the killings were related to criminal activity and launched an investigation, but had not made any arrests.

Wizards defeat Celtics in double overtime, improve to 5-1 on the season - NBC Sports

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards beat the Boston Celtics 115-112 in double overtime on Saturday night at Capital One Arena. Here are five observations from what went down...

Best start in 16 years

Apparently Wes Unseld Jr. is the secret ingredient that was missing all along. The Wizards beat the Celtics to move to 5-1, marking their best start to any season in 16 years. The last time the Wizards were 5-1 was 2005-06, when Unseld Jr. was in his first year as an NBA assistant coach, then on Eddie Jordan's staff.

Yes, it's been a long time. Those were the Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison days. It was Arenas' best season, when he averaged 29.3 points per game, and during an era where the Wizards were about as popular as they have ever been since the 1970s.

The fact Unseld Jr. is the common thread between the two makes for a great story. But also don't forget that Jamison is back with the organization in a front office role.

What's also kind of crazy to think about is how good the Wizards have been going back to last season. Remember, they went 17-6 to close the regular season last year. With their 5-1 start, the Wizards have won 22 of their last 29 regular season games.

The Wizards won this one despite a long list of late-game mistakes, ones which Unseld Jr. will certainly want to clean up. But they will take the win, regardless.

Three-point defense

One way or another, this game was going to be a clash between one team that likes to shoot a lot of threes and another that doesn't give up many of them. The Celtics entered the matchup second in the NBA in three-point attempts per game this season at 43.4, an early sign of the style new head coach Ime Udoka plans to play. Meanwhile, the Wizards were sixth in opponent's three-point percentage (31.4%) and third in both makes (9.6) and attempts (30.6) allowed per game.

Boston got their shots off, they just didn't fall and to a fairly ridiculous degree. They went 0-for-15 in the first half and were 0-for-20 at one point. The Celtics didn't make their first three until Payton Pritchard sank one with 9:05 left in the fourth quarter. For the game, they shot 2-for-26 (7.7%), as the Wizards' three-point defense continues to shine.

The Wizards went from very bad at defending threes in 2019-20 to about league average last season. This year, they are on track to be elite, at least so far.

Harrell keeps killing it

The Wizards have only played six games this season, yet when it comes to Montrezl Harrell, what more can be said? The guy has been an absolute monster, arguably their best player and definitely their most consistent. And he put in another big-time performance with 20 points, 14 rebounds and a block. He shot 7-for-8 from the free throw line and even made a three.

Harrell hit a half-court buzzer-beater to end the first half. It was his first made three since the 2018-19 season, on March 30, 2019.

There was talk before this game from Udoka about how big of a priority Harrell was for the Celtics to stop. They spent extra time watching film on him heading into the game. It didn't work. They even tried double-teams, like in the first half when Dennis Schroeder and Al Horford converged. Harrell just spun baseline and laid it in.

Late game execution

The Wizards had a long list of headscratching moments down the stretch of regulation and overtime. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope threw two bad inbound passes and dribbled out of bounds on the baseline. Bradley Beal (36 points) had four turnovers in the game, including one where he just lost the ball in traffic late in the fourth. Kyle Kuzma didn't have any help on a play late in the fourth where he had no choice but to launch a contested long two.

Luckily for the Wizards, a lot of the guys who made the mistakes later made up for them. Beal had a great sequence in the second overtime with a tough basket, a stop on Jayson Tatum and an assist to Spencer Dinwiddie. And Caldwell-Pope stole the ball from Jaylen Brown to seal the victory.

Gafford close

Based on the way Unseld Jr. framed it pregame, it sounds like Daniel Gafford's return from a right quad contusion will be very soon. He is moving better and getting his strength back. That is good news because he's a really good player, even though the Wizards have impressively gone 2-0 without him.

It has been interesting to see how the Wizards have managed without him. Sure, they have not been as good defending the rim without the threat of him blocking shots. But even with Harrell left as the only center, at just 6-foot-7, they can compensate for lack of size at that position in other ways.

Even with Gafford, they are a bit small at the five, but they have a host of forwards who stand 6-foot-10. At times these past two games, we've seen them roll out Deni Avdija, Davis Bertans and Kuzma in different combinations. That aspect of their roster is especially helpful against a team like Boston with so much size on the wing.

VinĂcius double leads Madrid to 2-1 win at 10-man Elche - Toronto Star

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — VinĂcius JĂșnior took over the scoring duties from Karim Benzema by netting twice to help Real Madrid win 2-1 at 10-man Elche on Saturday and join two other teams at the top of a tightly contested Spanish league.

Sevilla kept pace with Madrid by beating Osasuna 2-0, while Real Sociedad is level on points with the other two front-runners before it hosts Athletic Bilbao in a regional derby on Sunday.

VinĂcius opened the scoring at Elche with a 22nd-minute strike. After midfielder RaĂșl Guti was sent off for a second booking, the Brazilian winger then put the result beyond doubt in the 73rd.

Elche substitute Pere Milla pulled one back with four minutes to play, but it was not enough to keep his side unbeaten at home this campaign.

The 21-year-old VinĂcius once again showed his much-improved finishing. The double took his tally in all competitions to nine in 14 appearances this season, compared to six goals in 47 outings in 2020-21.

“This is thanks to the work I have been putting in since I arrived,” said VinĂcius, who debuted for Madrid aged 18 after the club had secured his transfer from Brazil’s Flamengo when he was 16.

Carlo Ancelotti rested Benzema ahead of Madrid’s Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

Madrid’s only victory in its previous four league games came last weekend when it won 2-1 at Barcelona.

Mariano DĂaz played his first minutes of the season in Benzema’s place. The rarely used striker showed his reflexes were still sharp when he used his heel to knock a pass from Casemiro into the path of VinĂcius for him to fire under Kiko Casilla.

Elche almost equalized thanks to Lucas Boyé. The striker stole the ball from David Alaba in the box, only for Lucas Pérez to waste a back-heeled pass by Javier Pastore that left him alone with only Thibaut Courtois to beat.

Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior, right, scores the opening goal during a Spanish La Liga soccer match between Elche and Real Madrid at the Martinez Valero stadium in Elche, Spain, Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021.

Elche was pressing for an equalizer when Guti made a dangerous tackle on Toni Kroos and was sent off in the 63rd.

VinĂcius finished Elche off when he chipped the ball over Casilla from a tight angle after Luka Modric played him clear with one touch.

Milla scored against the flow of play when Casemiro’s pass near his area was intercepted, leaving the forward alone to beat Courtois.

Madrid lost forward Rodrygo in the opening minutes to what appeared to be a leg injury.

Barcelona plays its first match since the firing of Ronald Koeman later Saturday when caretaker coach Sergi Barjuan leads the team against Alavés at Camp Nou. Villarreal visits Valencia.

On Sunday, Real Betis can pull level with Madrid, Sociedad and Sevilla if it beats Atlético Madrid.

OSASUNA LOSES AWAY

Sevilla ended Osasuna’s undefeated road record this season with a goal in each half under heavy rain at the SĂĄnchez PizjuĂĄn Stadium.

Defender Diego Carlos put the hosts ahead in the 40th by heading in Ivan Rakitic’s corner. Lucas Ocampos added a second after a defensive error in the 60th.

Osasuna was left in seventh place after its first loss in six away games.

Carey, Jorden help Stampeders double up Redblacks - TSN

OTTAWA — It took a bit for the Calgary Stampeders to get in gear on both sides of the ball Friday, but when they did, they took over the game.

KaDeem Carey had a rushing touchdown, Kamar Jorden had a receiving touchdown and Rene Paredes kicked four field goals in leading the Stampeders to a 26-13 over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night.

Calgary's defence chipped in with five quarterback sacks and allowed just three points through the final three quarters

"I thought it was a good, solid performance. I didn’t really think there was a lot fancy there, I just think we came out and did our job,” Stampeders coach Dave Dickenson said. “There were some challenges. I think ultimately Ottawa showed up to play, but we had some good things in us and we just kind of took the game over and didn’t make a lot of big mistakes."

Parades kicked a 47-yard field goal with just over two minutes to play for the only scoring of the fourth quarter.

The Stampeders (6-6) have won four of their last five games while the Redblacks (2-10) are on their second five-game losing streak of the season.

Bo Levi Mitchell completed 22-of-29 passes for 242 yards for the Stampeders while Carey had 103 yards rushing.

Defensive lineman Mike Ross wasn’t in total agreement with Dickenson and wasn’t as forgiving of the defence despite his two sacks and three tackles.

“Ok I’m gonna keep it real with y’all … we sucked on defence. We sucked. We did not play to our standard and we have to play much better,” Rose said.

“And when I say we I’m specifically talking about my group. I can’t speak to other groups, but I did not think we played to our ability, and I think we’re a much better group than that. We need to play much better in the run game.”

The night was short lived for Redblacks running pack Brendan Gillanders.

The Ottawa native was playing in his 100th CFL game but suffered an ankle injury making a tackle on the opening kick-off of the game. He did not return.

“I didn’t know the severity of the injury, but it’s definitely sad,” Redblacks quarterback Caleb Evans said about Gillanders.

“I wish he could have played the game out and enjoyed his 100th game but I know he’s got some more games.”

Evans was 15-of-28 for 173 yards for the Redblacks.

"We need to win a football game. that's what we get paid to do," said Redblacks coach Paul LaPolice. "As I see it, the execution was good enough for us to kick field goals, score touchdowns. It's disappointing. It's still a loss. You have to go into that room with those guys who worked their tails off and talk to them after a loss. That's the hard part."

Ottawa opened the scoring at 5:23 on a 15-yard field goal from Lewis Ward, but those points were tremendously aided by a 50-yard catch-and-run from Evans to Nate Behar.

Parades tied the game 3-3 with a 43-yard field goal at 10:03, and then a 11-yard touchdown reception by Kenny Stafford was 18 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Redblacks a 10-3 lead after the conversion.

That was the end of the first-half good news for Ottawa as it got just two first downs in the second quarter, one via penalty, and was outscored 10-0.

Carey scored on a three-yard run at 2:25 and Parades kicked a 27-yard field goal at 10:18 for a 13-10 Calgary lead.

The Stampeders carried that momentum into the third quarter, forcing the Redblacks to a two-and-out on the first drive before moving the ball 44 yards and finishing up with a 28-yard field goal from Parades at 4:28.

Ward got those three points back though with a 24-yard field goal with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.

The Stampeders closed out the quarter with a 15-yard pass from Jake Maier, who replaced Mitchell at quarterback for that play and three other short yardage plays, to Jorden and the Stampeders took a 23-13 lead into the fourth.

It was Maier’s only pass of the game.

It took a bit for the Calgary Stampeders to get in gear on both sides of the ball Friday, but when they did, they took over the game.

KaDeem Carey had a rushing touchdown, Kamar Jorden had a receiving touchdown and Rene Paredes kicked four field goals in leading the Stampeders to a 26-13 over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night.

Calgary’s defence chipped in with five quarterback sacks and allowed just three points through the final three quarters

“I thought it was a good, solid performance. I didn’t really think there was a lot fancy there, I just think we came out and did our job,” Stampeders coach Dave Dickenson said. “There were some challenges. I think ultimately Ottawa showed up to play, but we had some good things in us and we just kind of took the game over and didn’t make a lot of big mistakes.”

“Ok I’m gonna keep it real with y’all we sucked on defence.

“We need to win a football game. that’s what we get paid to do,” said Redblacks coach Paul LaPolice. “As I see it, the execution was good enough for us to kick field goals, score touchdowns. It’s disappointing. It’s still a loss. You have to go into that room with those guys who worked their tails off and talk to them after a loss. That’s the hard part.”

Tied at 14, the Catamounts scored six of the next eight points as a Janourova kill put WCU ahead 20-16. Garrison Nearly Notches Double-Double as 'Dogs Drop Home Match to USC Upstate - Gardner-Webb University Athletics - Gardner Webb University Bulldogs

Postgame Interview with Head Coach Eric Plunkett

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Kylee Garrison nearly notched her fifth double-double of the season, but the Gardner-Webb University volleyball team was unable to overcome an injury to team captain Hannah Donaldson midway through the first set as the Runnin' Bulldogs dropped Friday's match to USC Upstate in straight sets in front of a passionate home crowd inside Paul Porter Arena.

Doing her part to overcome the loss of her co-captain, Garrison led Gardner-Webb with a team-high 13 kills on .194 hitting with nine digs. It marks the 11th time this season the senior outside hitter has posted double-digit kills.

Makena Phillips and Audrey Gun each posted five kills apiece for the 'Dogs, while freshman Kayla Hawkins stepped in and produced four kills to match teammate Delaney McCullough, who led GWU with a strong .231 hitting percentage.

"Obviously, losing a player like Hannah in the manner in which we did, I think our team felt for that," said Gardner-Webb head coach Eric Plunkett. "It took us a little bit of time to get emotionally in a place to play, but I think we did. I'm extremely proud of the team today.

"We've had a few injuries recently, and this team could've given up," Plunkett continued. "But we didn't. We fought; we battled. Even with a crazy lineup with people that haven't played in any kind of position that they've played before, they were able to figure out a way to compete. I know it's not a win, but a 25-23 battle in the third set with losing those kinds of people with a caliber like Hannah, it's hopefully a situation we can move forward from."

Entering the weekend ranked No. 20 in the nation in digs per set, Mikah McIntosh paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with 17 digs. At setter, Tori Weatherley registered her second consecutive double-double with 24 assists and a career-high 13 digs.

Playing in front of a packed home crowd inside Paul Porter Arena, Gardner-Webb took a 13-12 lead over USC Upstate and remained tied at 16-16 before an injury to Donaldson forced the 'Dogs to play the remainder of the evening without its strong presence at the net. The Spartans immediately took advantage, racing ahead with a 9-1 run to cap off the opening frame, 25-17.

Upstate's momentum continued into set two as the No. 5 ranked team in the Big South surged to a 14-2 lead before ultimately taking the frame by a final score of 25-13 to increase its lead to 2-0. The Runnin' Bulldogs then continued to battle into set three, coming within one point at 23-22 to nearly steal the third frame, but the Spartans resisted the late pressure and capped off a straight-set victory with a 25-23 final to conclude the evening.

Gardner-Webb will return to the floor on Saturday, October 30 for a pivotal home match against UNC Asheville. First serve for the Big South showdown is set for 2 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena as the Runnin' Bulldogs celebrate Senior Day for its five seniors on the roster.

Double-digit snowfall totals recorded at Okanagan ski resorts - Globalnews.ca

It’s beginning to look a lot like … ski season.

Webcam images on Thursday from the Okanagan’s three biggest resorts show good accumulations of snow, courtesy of a blanket of precipitation that’s rolling across the region.

The depth of snow varies, but each resort hit double digits, with Big White Ski Resort reporting 15 cm during the past 24 hours.

“We clean the (snowfall) webcam every day at 4 p.m.,” Big White senior vice president Michael J. Ballingall said of the snowfall total. “At this time of the season, it just gets everybody excited.

“It makes everybody pick up the pace a little bit. If you’re painting, you’re painting a little bit faster. If you’re cleaning rooms, you’re cleaning them a little bit quicker.

“You never know at Big White; as soon as the snow is ready, we’re going to open the lifts so locals can get skiing and snowboarding.”

The resort has a tentative opening date of Thursday, Nov. 25, though Ballingall said it could sooner or later, pending the weather.

“We always aim to have the resort open by American Thanksgiving weekend,” said Ballingall. “That’s what our goal has always been.

“Right now, we’re thinking we might (open) a little bit earlier, but you never know with the storms that are coming through right now. One degree or two, and it could turn to rain this time of year. But two degrees lower, and you could get 30-40 cm of snow.

“So everyone has their fingers crossed.”

In the North Okanagan, SilverStar Resort said it had received around 30 cm of snow as of Thursday afternoon.

The resort said a storm forecast was projecting 55 cm, and that projected cold weather this week should hopefully help the fresh snow stick around.

SilverStar says its Nordic opening will be Nov. 26, with the alpine opening on Dec. 3.

In the South Okanagan, Apex Mountain Resort received 20 cm overnight, and another 5-7 cm of snow was expected Thursday.

“We already had about 10 cm on the ground, and up on top of the mountain, we’re sitting around 50 cm,” said resort manager James Shalman.

Apex’s opening date is slated for Dec. 11, but Shalman said the resort could open early if weather conditions are right.

“What we don’t want to do is open, then have to close due to Mother Nature,” said Shalman. “When we do open, we’re opening for good.

“But, yes, there’s always the possibility of opening early. We’ll have to see what the next month brings.”

Coaches and team officials in youth sports required to be double-vaccinated - Pique Newsmagazine

Island sports officials say B.C. public health orders announced Thursday calling for all adults coaching, managing or assisting with youth sports to be fully vaccinated won’t change much, because most sports organizations already have the requirement.

“It’s a good idea and makes sports safer. But it’s not a big change for us because most of our adults working with youth players are double-vaccinated anyway,” said Cam Hope, CEO of Saanichton-based B.C. Hockey.

“In our ecosystem, we were operating under these protocols, regardless.”

Hope said most of the regional hockey associations in the province have even more stringent regulations than the provincial health orders released Thursday.

“Also, we play in arenas, and each facility has had its own safety procedures for a long time now,” he said.

The Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association has already said that all coaches, managers, trainers and team officials must show proof of double vaccination by Nov. 22. The new provincial health order, although only announced Thursday, was introduced Oct. 25 and is retroactive to that date.

“We are highly supportive of the public health order, but we were already ahead of the game with our own regulations,” said Jim Humphrey, president of the association, which administers all youth hockey on the Island and Powell River.

“Our regulations also cover scorekeepers and timekeepers, because our youth players are in the penalty boxes with those adults, as well.”

The been-there-done-that refrain was echoed by Nicki Reich, president of the Victoria Minor Hockey Association.

“I’m glad the provincial health office has issued the same directive we have been implementing since the last month or so,” she said.

“It’s good to have that now backed up by the province. Very few of our coaches have been impacted by this because they are already double-vaccinated. But a few got vaccinated because of this requirement and that’s fantastic because we want as many people as possible vaccinated. We have had very little pushback on this.”

Reich said only one coach in the Victoria Minor Hockey Association has quit over the requirement: “He was transparent that he was not intending to get the vaccination and he has stepped down as coach and we respect his decision.”

Humphrey and Reich both said that one concern had been adult referees and linesmen who are required to be on the ice with youth hockey players. Refs and linesmen come under B.C. Hockey, which has issued a mandate requiring them all to be double-vaccinated.

“It’s good B.C. Hockey has mandated that, because parents told me they don’t want their kids on the ice with unvaccinated adult referees and linesmen,” said Humphrey.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said the orders come in response to concerns and questions from parents and others. The order isn’t about enforcement or punishment, but ensuring the safety of youth activities, he said. “If you’re supervising kids sports, you should vaccinate,” said Dix.

Some details have yet to be fleshed out for sports organizations and others involved with activities such as dance. Dix and provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry are expected to provide more information on Tuesday.

B.C. reported 758 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, as the province inches closer to a 90 per cent vaccination rate for all eligible residents aged 12 and up. Island Health reported a spike of 114 new cases, for a total of 586 active cases.

The Health Ministry said 4,961 COVID-19 infections are active in the province, including 434 people in hospital with 155 in intensive care.

Ten more deaths were reported on Thursday, pushing the death toll to 2,147.

Ontario will double fines and order takeovers at nursing homes that break new rules - Toronto Star

Nursing homes breaking the rules would see maximum fines doubled and the worst performers could face temporary takeovers under long-awaited legislation proposed in the wake of a pandemic that saw almost 4,000 vulnerable residents die.

The bill, called the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, follows angry and anguished calls from families of loved ones in long-term care and government watchdogs for reforms and repairs to a system Premier Doug Ford admits is “broken” from years of neglect, its weaknesses laid bare by COVID-19.

Long-Term Care Minister Rod Phillips said this is a “watershed moment” for long-term care in Ontario, where more than 15,000 residents living in close quarters and thousands more nursing home workers caught COVID.

“This, of course, is a highly emotional issue,” he told the Star’s editorial board Thursday, acknowledging there will be “skepticism” as to whether the reforms will bring the improvements and enforcement necessary.

“As my mother would have said, the proof will be in the pudding.”

The Ontario Health Coalition questioned why the Ford government it touting the new bill when it hasn’t already thrown the book at nursing homes with high pandemic death and infection rates.

“This government has for three years done nothing to hold any of the terrible operators to account despite already having powers … to fine, have provincial offences charged, suspend licences, revoke licences,” said executive director Natalie Mehra.

“Doubling fines sounds great but the existing heavy fines … have never been enforced.”

The legislation, if passed, would grant the government powers to appoint supervisors for troubled homes — as the province now does with dysfunctional school boards and hospitals.

“In any system there’s going to be some bad actors, and we will, as required, make sure that those actors feel the full force of these rules,” added Phillips, who lamented that only one charge has been laid by his ministry in the last 11 years but without a conviction.

“We expect quality of care and quality of life to be the focus.”

Under the new act, inspectors in Phillips’ ministry will have the same powers to lay charges on the spot as do inspectors from the ministries of labour and the environment. This week, the labour ministry revealed it has laid three Occupational Health and Safety Act charges against a London nursing home. The charges have not been tested in court.

The new nursing homes act also doubles maximum fines to $200,000 for individuals and $500,000 for corporations on a first offence and to $400,000 and $1 million for second offences.

Members of boards running for-profit nursing homes could be on the hook with maximum fines of $200,000 and $400,000 on first and second offences, with lower maximum fines of $4,000 for not-for-profit homes.

The higher fines are intended to get the attention of for-profit operators amid a push from some opposition parties and activists for them to be phased out of the system after several for-profit homes, such as Orchard Villa in Pickering, experienced severe outbreaks and high death tolls from COVID.

Ford called in Canadian Armed Forces medical teams to assist at the hardest-hit homes, where staffing levels dropped as low as 20 per cent because of illness and absenteeism. A military report later exposed horrible living conditions and poor care, such as residents force-fed to the point of choking, or malnourished and dehydrated.

“We have to have real financial teeth,” Phillips said, calling the penalties “an effective tool to correct organizations that are not fulfilling their obligations.”

Opposition parties said the government should have done more to drive for-profit companies out of the long-term care system and replace them with not-for-profits. Instead, some for-profit companies with bad COVID records are being awarded new beds as the system expands.

“Doug Ford isn’t getting tough on bad actors, he’s emboldening the worst offenders with more public money,” said Deputy New Democrat Leader Sara Singh.

Among other things, the bill would enshrine in law Ford’s promise to provide four hours of daily hands-on care to nursing home residents daily by 2025 and set interim targets; double the number of inspectors with new powers to lay charges on the spot; mandate a properly trained infection prevention and control lead for every home; require every home to improve palliative care and ban anyone convicted of an offence under the new law from working, volunteering or sitting on the board of any nursing home.

Palliative care is an important component because one-third of nursing home residents die every year in normal circumstance, said Phillips.

The legislation would replace the existing Long-Term Care Home Act passed in 2007, and a previous attempt at reform by Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government.

Phillips is introducing the bill as long-term care homes continue to grapple with staffing shortages and the government scrambles to get more personal support workers and nurses in the pipeline to meet the four-hours-of-care standard, up from an average of under three hours today.

While the government has earmarked $4.9 billion to train and hire 27,000 more staff to meet the commitment, it vastly underestimates the number of personal support workers and nurses needed and does not have enough incentives in place to attract them, several critics said.

“For that to happen there has to be visible commitment to full-time jobs, higher pay that’s permanent for all staff and better working conditions to retain this very exhausted and overworked long-term care workforce,” said Candace Rennick of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

The government has promised 30,000 new long-term care beds by 2028, with thousands already in development. But that growth will also fuel the need for more nursing home workers.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said Thursday that a taxpayer-funded top up of $3 hourly for 50,000 personal support workers in nursing homes will be extended to next March 31 to help attract and retain PSWs who perform the bulk of care for residents in nursing homes, such as toileting, bathing, grooming, dressing and feeding.

The same top-up is being provided to PSWs in home care and those in services for children, community and social services. Hospital PSWs will continue to get an extra $2 hourly.

Critics have been calling on the government to make the increases permanent to provide a sense of certainty instead of a series of temporary extensions. New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath has promised to bump PSW wages by $5 hourly if elected premier next June 2.
