The novel move is intended to create dozens of new, much-needed spaces

Parking is usually a hassle at busy locations, as any Haligonians who has tried to park at Victoria General (VG) at peak times will attest. Now, the hospital has a plan to increase the number of available spaces: double parking.

Under the new assisted parking program designed to alleviate a chronic shortage of space, drivers who arrive to a full lot at the VG will have the choice of double-parking their car in a designated location, then giving their keys to an attendant. That person will then apparently be responsible for moving your vehicle should the car (or cars) blocked in by the double-parked machine need to be moved.
Speaking to the CBC, a spokesperson said staff will complete a “short vehicle inspection” after taking the keys. This valet-like (well, sort of) service will carry regular parking rates and is set to begin September 7. For now, the new rules will apply solely to a pair of selected areas on the lot, quashing any visions of an Atlantic parking free-for-all after Labour Day. Spox went on to tell our nation’s broadcaster that someone who’s worked on a similar system has been retained to train VG staff and that drivers “can feel safe and secure that we’ll take care of their car.”
