Red Sox ace Chris Sale strikes out nine in latest Double-A rehab start - NBC Sports Boston

Chris Sale continues to make good progress in his journey back to the Boston Red Sox.

The veteran left-hander made his latest rehab start for Double-A Portland on Sunday afternoon. He allowed six hits, two earned runs, zero walks and struck out nine batters over 3 2/3 innings.

He threw 64 pitches, including 46 for strikes.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after Boston's thrilling comeback win over the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on Sunday that the plan is for Sale's next rehab to be Saturday with Triple-A Worcester.

Tomase: Richards could be Red Sox' odd man out when Sale returns

"He felt good," Cora said of Sale's outing. "Had some traffic on the bases, but handled it well. Good day of work."

The Red Sox are wisely taking a cautious approach with Sale as he works his way back to full strength following his Tommy John surgery in March of 2020.

Getting a healthy Sale back in the starting rotation would be a massive boost for the Red Sox as the postseason races heat up over the next two months.
