GUYSBOROUGH – The province announced July 16 that it would receive an additional $55 million through the Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF, formerly known as the gas tax fund), to help municipalities carry out infrastructure projects that support the well-being of their residents. This is in addition to the $58 million the province received earlier this year.
Municipality of the District of Guysborough (MODG) CAO Barry Carroll told The Journal via email that the municipality had received notification prior to the July 16 press release that they would receive double the amount expected from the fund this year, $674,017.
He also wrote, “On the gas tax funds [now the CCBF], council approved a list of projects at budget time.”
Projects funded by the CCFB in the most recent budget include kiosks and site work at the Commercial Cable location in Hazel Hill; Salsman Park marina; Guysborough tennis court; Canso basketball court, lights and upgrades; Canso arena entrance; Whitehead community association and the municipal asset management plan.
Carroll said the municipality will review its list of pending capital projects, once it gets a call for applications from the province for the new funds.
“Every September, we generally approve a five-year capital plan that we submit to government … although council can change the priorities on the plan if necessary when they apply for funding.”
Municipal Affairs Minister Brendan Maguire said of the CCFB investment in the province, “This funding will allow municipalities to invest in public infrastructure that addresses local priorities … The last 18 months have been hard on Nova Scotia’s economy. This investment helps municipalities kick-start projects that contribute to economic growth and job creation.“
Projects eligible for CCFB funding, range from energy systems to solid waste to recreational infrastructure. Fire halls and fire-station infrastructure have been recently added as an investment category, further contributing to the program’s objective of building stronger and more resilient communities.
