5 Proven Ways to Double Your Money - Motley Fool

Few of us have saved enough for retirement, so most of us should be actively saving and investing for the future. Ideally, we will double however much we have saved by now, and then double it again and again.

Here are five money-doubling strategies to consider.

1. A 401(k) company match

The first way to double your money is nearly effortless. If your employer offers a 401(k) plan, it's usually a very good idea to participate. Better still, since many companies offer matching 401(k) contributions, if you invest at least enough to max out that match, you'll be collecting as much free money as you can from your company.

Matches often double your contribution, to a certain degree. Some, for example, will match your contributions dollar for dollar, perhaps up to the first 3% or more of your salary that you pitch in. That's a perfect example of doubling your money: It's a guaranteed 100% return. There are other company-match formulas, too, such as matching 50% of your contributions up to 6% of your salary. That one doesn't double your 6%, but it gives you a total of 3% of your salary.

2. The magic of compounding

Compounding is simply math that demonstrates how numbers (such as interest or stock investments) can grow over time. Check out the table below, showing how much a single investment of just $1,000 can grow, at an average annual rate of 8%:

Over This Period...

...$1,000 Will Grow to:

5 years

$1,469

10 years

$2,159

15 years

$3,172

20 years

30 years

$31,920

50 years

$46,902

55 years

$68,914

60 years

$101,257

You see that your original $1,000 more than doubles in 10 years, and more than doubles again after 20 years, and 30 years, and so on. You'll double your money even faster if you're not waiting for a single investment to grow and are instead adding to your investments over time. For example:

3. Dividends

Investing in dividend-paying stocks is another good way to work on doubling your money. They're stocks like any other, with their prices rising over time as long as the companies are healthy and growing. But along with that usual stock-price appreciation come dividend payments, which also tend to grow over time. That's a powerful one-two punch.

Imagine Hats for Cats Inc. (ticker: SNZZY), paying $2 per year in dividends and increasing that payout by 10% annually. In a mere seven years, the dividend will have grown to $3.90, having nearly doubled, so you'd be collecting nearly twice as much in cash per year from your shares. As long as the company kept performing well, your income would keep growing over time -- along with the stock price.

4. Growth stocks

Growth stocks are a great way to not only double your money, but potentially triple or quadruple it, or more. Growth stocks sometimes can be more volatile and risky, though, and they're often trading at rather lofty levels. So approach them carefully, and aim to buy the ones that seem the most undervalued while offering a lot of potential.

Follow our Motley Fool investing philosophy and you'll buy 25 or more stocks, while aiming to hold them for at least five years. Doing so should give you a decent chance of having one outstanding performer (or many) and having your winners far offset your losers.

5. Value stocks

Another way to double your money in stocks is via value investing, which entails less risk than growth investing because value investors seek a margin of safety before committing their hard-earned dollars to any stock.

Don't assume that being a value investor dooms you to slower-growing companies, either. Even growth stocks can be undervalued at times, offering the best of both worlds. For example, Meta Platforms (the company formerly known as Facebook) was recently trading with a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 23.6, considerably lower than its five-year average of 30.9, and a price-to-sales ratio of 8.5, also below its five-year average of 10.7. It's a company that reported its third-quarter revenue was up 35% year over year and earnings per share up 19%. It's clearly both a growth stock and a value stock.

These are some of the many ways you might go about doubling your money. They're not the only ones, though. You might, for example, invest in real estate successfully, or take on a side gig or two to double the money with which you can invest. However you do it, aim to increase your assets significantly over the years ahead.

Town Brewery and Beertown Release Moments of Truth Double IPA - Canadian Beer News

WHITBY, ON – Ontario craft beer bar chain Beertown has announced the release of its quarterly collaboration brew for Winter 2021-22, which has been created in partnership with Town Brewery.

Moments of Truth Double IPA (8% abv):

Inspired by our collective love for beers from Vermont, we decided to create a Double IPA that takes the term “hazy” to the next level! Brewed with Mosaic Hops, El Dorado, Belma and Rapidase Revelation powder (which is also used by wine makers to intensify aromatics), expect huge notes of candied orange and lemon, juicy peach and pine. Slightly sweet and full bodied, it’s super smooth and a perfect holiday IPA meant to be shared with friends!

Moments of Truth is officially launching today (December 16th) and will be available on tap at all Beertown locations, and in cans at the Town Brewery retail store and online shop.

NFL Week 15 Power Rankings: Chiefs double trouble with dominant defense; Packers also frustrating offenses - CBSSports.com

chiefsdefense.png

Most of the talk regarding the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys when the season started centered on their offenses, while most wondered whether the defenses could be good enough to help those teams get to a Super Bowl.

With four weeks left in the season, and it's the defenses of those teams that have taken on a starring role. The three teams sit atop their respective divisions heading into the stretch run because the defenses have played so well that they have carried offenses that have sputtered at times.

The Chiefs have flashed signs of their explosive offense some this season, even showing some of that in Sunday's blowout of the Las Vegas Raiders, but it's the defense that has shined in the past two months to get them to 9-4. They are sixth in scoring defense.

The Cowboys have recently looked average on offense as Dak Prescott's early MVP play has leveled off, but they are showing real signs of coming to life on defense. With their pass-rushers all back from injury, they have a front that can change games quickly, which it did against Washington in a tough victory on the road Sunday to take command of the division. They are 12th in scoring defense.

Green Bay's defense has been impressive under first-year coordinator Joe Barry. They have been the surprising unit in Green Bay, and will soon get back key players in corner Jaire Alexander and pass-rusher Za'Darius Smith. Green Bay is seventh in scoring defense.

The Packers are now first in my Power Rankings, followed by Kansas City at No. 5 and Dallas in the seventh spot. If the offenses of those three teams can get back to being as explosive as expected, they all have a chance to be the Super Bowl champions.

Who knew it would be because of their defenses?

Biggest Movers
4 Football Team

1 Packers They just keep on rolling, even with a ton of injuries on the offensive line. Aaron Rodgers helps cure those issues. 1 10-3-0
2 Buccaneers They made it interesting against Buffalo, but they found a way in overtime. The defense still has a way to go to be back to the Super level of last season. 1 10-3-0
3 Patriots They come off their bye as the top seed in the AFC facing a tough road game at Indianapolis against the Colts. Bill Belichick for NFL Coach of the Year. 1 9-4-0
4 Cardinals They lost to an undermanned Rams team at home, which is not a good look. The defense really let them down. 3 10-3-0
5 Chiefs They probably wish they could play the Raiders every week seeing how they dominated them in both games. They seem to be getting it going at the right time. -- 9-4-0
6 Titans The defense impressed in shutting out the Jaguars. They now face a tough road game at Pittsburgh, but they pretty much own the division now. 3 9-4-0
7 Cowboys The defense will be trouble going forward now that the injured down players are back on the field. They can wreck a game. Dak Prescott does have to pick it up. 3 9-4-0
8 Chargers They have won two straight and head to a big Thursday night game with the Chiefs looking good. Justin Herbert is back in a big way. 3 8-5-0
9 Rams That was a huge road victory Monday night with all the injuries and COVID players who were out. Credit Matt Stafford for getting it done. 3 9-4-0
10 Bills Two straight losses has them reeling as they head to the final four weeks. They have to get it going or they could be the biggest flop of the season. The schedule is favorable. 3 7-6-0
11 Ravens With Lamar Jackson banged up and Green Bay coming to town, they have big issues. They've navigated through a bunch of problems, but this will be the biggest. 3 8-5-0
12 Bengals They've lost two straight and haven't looked as crisp as in some earlier games. They still can win the division, but it has to start this week. -- 7-6-0
13 Colts They are firmly in the playoff chase, but they come off the bye with a home game against the Patriots. That's a proving-ground game for this team. -- 7-6-0
14 49ers Pulling out a big overtime victory at Cincinnati has them in the playoffs right now. Jimmy Garoppolo has played well this season. 2 7-6-0
15 Broncos They have put themselves smack dab in the playoff race. The running game is leading this team on offense right now. 3 7-6-0
16 Steelers This is a team getting beat up on both lines. You can't win games that way. They are in big trouble. 2 6-6-1
17 Browns By holding on to beat the Baltimore Ravens, they have a real chance now to win the division. The schedule down the stretch is brutal. 3 7-6-0
18 Vikings They always seem to make it interesting in the end. But they found a way against the Steelers last Thursday, which keeps them in the playoff mix. 3 6-7-0
19 Football Team With Taylor Heinicke injured, it could be Kyle Allen's time. He would face a big game this week against the Eagles. 4 6-7-0
20 Raiders Their season is spiraling out of control after their blowout loss to the Chiefs. They are on life support now. 3 6-7-0
21 Dolphins They were on a five-game winning streak when they went to the bye. Can they regain that momentum this week against the Jets? 2 6-7-0
22 Eagles They should have Jalen Hurts back this week as they ready to play Washington in a big division game. PS: He is their quarterback, so let's stop the Gardner Minshew mania. -- 6-7-0
23 Saints The defense won that game against the Jets, but Taysom Hill showed improvement throwing it. Now comes a huge game with Tampa Bay. -- 6-7-0
24 Seahawks They've won two straight to keep their playoff hopes alive. They would likely have to win out, which won't be easy. 1 5-8-0
25 Falcons They kept their playoff chances alive by winning at Carolina. The defense played well in that one, but now they have a tough trip to San Francisco. 1 6-7-0
26 Panthers The firing of coordinator Joe Brady didn't do much for the offense. They are just not good enough on that side of the ball, no matter who calls the plays. 2 5-8-0
27 Giants This season is done. It's time to start thinking about the future and what changes are coming. Will Joe Judge survive? -- 4-9-0
28 Bears It's going to be a non-playoff season, which means it's likely the end for Matt Nagy. At least they have a young quarterback to build around in Justin Fields. -- 4-9-0
29 Jets Zach Wilson regressed again against the Saints. There are going to be days like that for rookie quarterbacks. It's all about learning. -- 3-10-0
30 Texans Davis Mills actually did some good things against the Seahawks. Now they play the Jaguars in a game that could decide who picks first overall. -- 2-11-0
31 Lions The injuries and the loss of a lot of players to illness and COVID proved to be too much at Denver. They just don't have enough talent to overcome that. -- 1-11-1
32 Jaguars This thing has gone bad in a big way and the Urban Meyer stories aren't helping. They are wrecking Trevor Lawrence, who has regressed this season. -- 2-11-0

DIPA your toes into flavour country with this brand spanking new, double dry-hopped IPA! Listen, I know that a business-minded ThinkPad is not the most exciting holiday gift, but ThinkPads on the whole are some of the best Windows laptops you can buy. Or give as a gift. Or give to yourself as a year-end bonus. Many ThinkPad models are still on sale, including some that are more than half off. And if you have a gamer on your holiday shopping list as opposed to a business exec, then check out the Legion 5i Gen 6, now on sale, which combines AMD's stellar Ryzen 7 5800H CPU with Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3060 graphics.

You'll need discount codes for most of these Lenovo deals, which we've listed below, but the codes should appear on Lenovo's website, too. In addition to the discounted prices you see below, you can stack another discount on top of them with code MERRYSAVING. With it, you'll save an extra $25 if you spend at least $500, $40 if you spend $750, $60 if you spend $1,000 or $100 if you spend $1,500 or more.

We'll keep this page updated with all the latest Lenovo deals.

Sarah Tew/CNET

You can get a loaded version of Lenovo's flagship ThinkPad for nearly half price with code THINKHOLIDAYS3. It features an 11th-gen Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a huge 1TB solid-state drive. The 14-inch display offers a 1,920x1,200-pixel resolution and is rated for a more-than-adequate 400 nits of brightness.

Lenovo

Lenovo's ThinkPad T series is second only to the company's flagship X1 Carbon line in the ThinkPad pecking order. The ThinkPad T14S is a slimmer version of the ThinkPad T14, though not quite as thin as the flagship ThinkPad X1 Carbon. You can put a huge dent in the cost of a well-equipped model with code THINKHOLIDAYS3. It features an 11th-gen Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The 14-inch screen has full-HD resolution and is rated for an acceptable 300 nits of brightness.

Lenovo

This ThinkPad X13 is another ultraportable option for those who can't afford the high prices of the X1 Carbon. This discounted model with code THINKHOLIDAYS3 features an 11th-gen Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The 13.3-inch display has a 16:10 aspect ratio to provide more vertical space (so less scrolling), with a 1,920x1,200-pixel resolution, and is rated for a sufficient 300 nits of brightness.

Lenovo

This thin and light laptop is more than half off with code T13SHOLIDEALS. It features a higher-resolution display and more memory and solid-state storage space than you usually find on a laptop that costs around $800. It serves up a 13.3-inch display with a 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution powered by an 11th-gen Intel Core i5 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

Lori Grunin/CNET

The X1 Extreme is no ordinary ThinkPad. This model serves up a 16-inch display with 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution and rated for an impressive 400 nits of brightness. It features an 11th-gen Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and GeForce RTX 3060 graphics that allow you to go beyond basic office tasks and engage in content creation and a bit of gaming. You can save a bundle with code THINKHOTDEALS.

Joshua Goldman/CNET

Our favorite two-in-one laptop for the business set, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga boasts an abundance of hardware options and security features wrapped up in a thin, light aluminum frame. This model is more than half off with code THINKGREENDEAL and features an 11th-gen Core i5 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. It also includes the ThinkPad Pen Pro. The 14-inch screen features a 16:10 aspect ratio for more vertical space than wider 16:9 screens and is rated for a dazzling 500 nits of brightness.

Lenovo

This discounted Legion 5i Gen 6 model features AMD's stellar, eight-core Ryzen 7 5800H CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics. The 16-inch display features a fine 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution and a speedy 165Hz refresh rate. You can knock more than $300 off the price with code DECEMBERCTODEALS. It's customizable, and the only update I'd recommend is doubling the RAM to 16GB for a reasonable $55. And maybe doubling the SSD to 1TB for another $70.
